JPL HIKING CLUB /hiking/hiking.html HAWKINS LOOP DAYHIKE Saturday, November 1, 1997 LEADER: Allan Klumpp 818-354-3892 (JPL) 626-578-0599 (home) CLASSIFICATION: Moderate, about 12 miles, 2800 ft gain. DESCRIPTION: This dayhike traverses Middle Hawkins, Sadie Hawkins, and South Hawkins, among the most scenic peaks in the San Gabriels. During early spring, the air should be crisp and clear, affording fine views of surrounding mountains and the valley below. Large pines and firs grow on these mountains, but not so densely as to interfere with views. Many of Southern California's largest mountains can be seen from our route, including Baldy, Baden Powell, Islip, and others. The hike begins and ends at the Crystal Lake campground, at 5800 ft elevation north of Azusa. We gain most of our altitude early, ascending northward 1700 ft to Windy Gap. From there, we proceed eastward a few miles to the intersection with the trail that follows a ridge southward, crossing the more rewarding three of the Hawkins peaks, missing Mt Hawkins itself. We can eat lunch on the most scenic peak, Middle Hawkins, a mile or two south of the trail intersection. After lunch, we continue southward, crossing Sadie Hawkins and climbing the long ridge up to South Hawkins. From South Hawkins, we descend westward along the fire road to the Windy Gap trail, and then southward a mile or so to the parking lot. MEETING TIME AND PLACE: Meet at 8:30 (Pacific Standard Time) at the parking lot on the south side of the road leading eastward from the concessions building (not open) at the Crystal Lake campground. The parking lot is less than half a mile beyond the concessions building just before a gate which normally prevents proceeding by car to Deer Flats. To get to Crystal Lake, drive northward along California route 39, which crosses the 210 freeway at Azusa. CONTACT: Please contact me by Thursday, October 30, so I can arrange carpooling and know how many to expect. BRING: Inclement weather gear, lunch, snacks, plenty of water (none drinkable en-route). If you have any questions, please call the trip leader.
